Artists and Engravers: Made by Simon Wynouts Frisius after Matthijs Bril. Simon Wynouts Frisius (ca. 1580-1628) was a Dutch engraver, etcher, draughtsman and calligrapher, born in Harlingen. He spent a few years in Paris but returned to the Netherlands, where he would spend his final days in The Hague. Matthijs Bril or Matthijs Bril the Younger (1550, Antwerp-1583, Rome) was a Flemish painter specialised in landscapes. He spent most of his active career in Rome (from c. 1575) where he introduced the northern style of landscape painting. He was the son of the painter Matthijs Bril the Elder (Breda- died c. 1550, Antwerp).[2] and elder brother of Paul Bril.
Subject: Antique print, untitled. The birth of Christ in Bethlehem. Jesus, Mary and Joseph are in a barn, with the shepherds just arriving form the bottom of the image. Normal life continues, with a man drawing water from a well, and another on a ladder doing construction work (?).
Condition: Good, given age. Margins quite soiled. Some small stains in the image. From the collection of Graf F.J. von Enzenberg (Lugt 845). General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.
