Description: From the series with landscapes after Brill. State: Second state of 4. Ref: Hollstein 76-111. Provenance: Albert van Loock (Lugt 3751).

Artists and Engravers: Made by 'Willem van Nieulandt' after 'Paul Bril'. Willem van Nieulandt III (ca. 1584 - 1635) was a pupil of Jacob Savry and Paul Bril. He travelled to Rome around 1602. This had a profound influence on his work. Van Nieulandt was also active as a poet. Paul Bril (1554-1626) was a landscape painter who worked in Rome, although born in Antwerp. This type of landcape, known as vedute ideate or vedute di fantasia, is a typical example of his best-known work.
