Artists and Engravers: Made by 'Simon Frisius' after 'Mathys Bril'. Simon Frisius (1580-1629) was born in Friesland and active in the first quarter of the 17th. Century. His prints show a very distinct style and mannerist character. Matthijs Bril or Matthijs Bril the Younger (1550, Antwerp-1583, Rome) was a Flemish painter specialised in landscapes. He spent most of his active career in Rome (from c. 1575) where he introduced the northern style of landscape painting.
