Artists and Engravers: Made by 'Simon Frisius' after 'Matthijs Bril'. Simon Frisius (1580-1629) was born in Friesland and active in the first quarter of the 17th. Century. His prints show a very distinct style and mannerist character. Matthijs Bril or Matthijs Bril the Younger (1550, Antwerp-1583, Rome) was a Flemish painter specialised in landscapes. He spent most of his active career in Rome (from c. 1575) where he introduced the northern style of landscape painting. He was the son of the painter Matthijs Bril the Elder (Breda- died c. 1550, Antwerp).[2] and elder brother of Paul Bril.
