Artists and Engravers: Made by 'Cornelis Ploos van Amstel/Cornelis Brouwer' after 'Lucas van Leijden'. Cornelis Ploos van Amstel (1726-1798) was active as merchant in Amsterdam. He was an avid collector of art and invented a method of making prints after drawings from his own collection. Lucas van Leyden (1494 - 1533), also named either Lucas Hugensz or Lucas Jacobsz, a Dutch engraver and painter, born and mainly active in Leiden. Lucas van Leyden was among the first Dutch exponents of genre painting and is generally regarded as one of the finest engravers in the history of art.
