Artists and Engravers: Made by 'Charles Motte' after 'Claude Henry Watelet'. Charles Motte (1785-1836) was one of the early lithographers in Paris, where he started in 1817. He published a vast amount of lithographs, including early work by eugene Delacroix. Claude Henry Watelet (French; 1718-1786) was a wealthy collector, amateur painter, well-respected etcher, writer on the arts and a connoisseur of gardens. He introduced the English landscape garden to France, as the jardin Anglois. Watelet was at the center of the French art world of his time. From 1767 Rembrandt's copper etching plates were preserved in Watelet's collection, which he worked up and re-published.
