Artists and Engravers: Made by Matthias de Sallieth after L. Bakhuizen. Matthias / Mattheus de Sallieth (1749-1791) was born in Prague and trained as an engraver in Paris. He settled in Rotterdam. Ludolf Backhuysen (1631-1708) was a Dutch painter and draftsman. He was strongly influenced by Willem van de Velde de Jonge. He painted harbour, marine scenes and ships. He is famous for his depictions of stormy seas and shipwrecks. He painted many scenes of Dutch maritime / marine history.
