Description: This original plate originates from: 'Voyage en Egypte, en Nubie, et lieux circonvoisins, depuis 1805 jusqu'en 1828.', by J.J. Rifaud, published in Paris 1830-1836. This work first appeared in installments and was to contain five text volumes and 300 plates. The text never appeared and how many plates were published is not certain. A collection of 223 plates is known. The plates depict a wide variety of subjects: temples, hieroglyphics, tomb findings, boats (dows), jewelry, pottery, but also fishes, plants, etc. Ref: Ibrahim-Hilmy, p. 174; Graesse VI, 122; Brunet IV, 1203. Scarse. State: Only state. Ref: Undescribed. Very rare, these lithographs were never published.

Artists and Engravers: Made by 'Louis Leroux' after 'Jean-Jacques Rifaud'. Louis Leroux remains undescribed Jean-Jacques Rifaud (1786-1852), sculptor by profession, had set his mind on travelling and embarked for his first voyage to Egypt in 1813. Rifaud spent many years in Egypt carrying out excavations. There he became the right-hand man of Bernardino Drovetti, Napoleon's Proconsul in Egypt. He helped Drovetti amassing a vast quantity of Egyptian antiquities, now i.a. in Turin, Paris and Berlin.
