Artists and Engravers: Made by 'Ernst Willem Jan Bagelaar' after 'Andreas Schelfhout'. 'Ernst Willem Jan Bagelaar' after own design. Ernst Willem Jan Bagelaar (1775-1837) was born in Eindhoven. He first entered the army, but early acquired a liking for the fine arts, and instructed himself in etching. He studied the arts by travelling through Germany and staying in Paris. Many of his etchings are based on his own designs. He had a liking of Jan Luyken, of whom he possessed a considerable collection of drawings. Andreas Schelfhout (1787-1870) is considered to be one of the most important Romantic painters in the Netherlands.
