Artists and Engravers: Made by 'Nicolas Larmessin' after 'Francois Boucher '. Nicolas IV Larmessin (1684-1755) was a famous French engraver and print seller, student of his father. Graveur du Roy. Francois Boucher (1703-1770) was a prominent French painter in the rococo style. He is known for idyllic, pastoral scenes and voluptuous treatment of classical themes.
Subject: Antique Master Print, titled: 'Le calandrier des veillards. Avec ton Almanac de jeune, et d'abstinence. Remporte, vieux Mari, ta harangue et ton or: Ell es son Ravisseur l'honorent trop encor. De t'acorder tous deux cen moment d'audience.' - (The calender of the elder. With your Almanac of youth, and abstinence. Wear, old Husband, your harangue and your gold: She is his ravisher and honors him still too much. To understand you both this visiting moment.) Rare satirical antique master print. An older oriental man with his young woman are greeted by an old man. A harbour scene in the background, a moorish boy with a monkey to the left. The symbolism being probably to warn against the marriage of an older man and a young woman.
Condition: Good, given age. Ample margins on three sides, thread margins on the lower margin. Remains of attachment to carrier sheet to the top edge verso. Margins a little browned and with some scattered soiling. A faint dampstain in the top margin. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.
