Artists and Engravers: Made by 'Wallerant Vaillant' after 'Cornelis Bega'. Wallerant Vaillant (1623-1677) was one of the first artists who extensively used the mezzotint technique. He created many fine prints in this medium. With his brothers Bernard Vaillant (1632-1698), also a mezzotint engraver and Jean he came from France to the Northern Netherlands around 1650. Cornelis Pietersz. Bega (1620-1664) was a Dutch genre painter, draughtsman and engraver from Haarlem. He was the son of Pieter J. Begeyn and he was a pupil of Adriaen van Ostade. He travelled to Germany, Switzerland and Italy.

Subject: Antique Master Print, untitled. Innkeeper with three seated figures playing a game on a barrel. A few playing cards scattered on the ground.

Condition: Good, given age. Full print and small defects backed by thin oriental paper. Horizontal crease in middle, with small tears in left and right margins. Plate edge at right middle with some paper separation. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.
