Artists and Engravers: Made by 'Hendrick Hondius' after 'Pieter Stevens'. Hendrik Hondius I (1573-1650) was one the very active printmaker/publishers in the early part of the 17th. Century. He was based in The Hague. Pieter Stevens II, Flemish (c. 1567-1624 or after). Pieter Stevens probably trained in Antwerp before becoming a master landscape painter there in 1589. His early drawings were of ancient monuments in Rome and Naples, and were most likely copies of Jan Brueghel the Elder’s work. Stevens was appointed court painter to Emperor Rudolf II in Prague in 1594. During this period, he specialized in scenes of peasant life and mountains. His designs were used as furniture decorations and also engraved. From 1620 to 1624, Stevens worked for Prince Charles of Liechtenstein.
