Artists and Engravers: Made by 'Valentine Green' after 'Francis Cotes'. Valentine Green (1739-1813), was a renowned British engraver and print publisher. He was one of the first engravers to show how admirably mezzotint engraving could be applied for pictorial compositions as well as portraits. Particularly his portrait engravings are sought for by collectors. His engravings are distinguished by exceptional richness and subtlety of tone, light and shade. He is considered one of the foremost Britsh engravers of his time. Francis Cotes (British; 1726-1770) was one the most famous portrait painters of his day.
