Description: From a series of twelve plates of black and white soft-ground etchings, originally published by Rudolph Ackermann on 1 January 1819, and published as a drawing book with a different title in 1821; the cover is lettered: 'A new drawing-book, in the Manner of Chalk, containing Twelve Views in the West of England; Glastonbury. Tavistock. Ditto. Lynmouth. Exmouth. East-Bourne. View of a farm near Tavistock.
Artists and engravers:Made by Samuel Prout after own design. Samuel Prout (1783 - 1852) was one of the masters of British watercolour architectural painting. Prout secured the position of Painter in Water-Colours in Ordinary to King George IV in 1829 and afterwards to Queen Victoria. Prout is often compared to his contemporaries; Turner, Gainsborough, Constable and Ruskin, whom he taught. He made several very popular sets of cityviews and landscapes.
